Sinds 2003 is de kantorenleegstand opgelopen naar 15% op nationaal niveau, door overproductie en een ingrijpende afname van de vraag naar kantoormeters en een massale afstoot van kantoorruimte. De kredietcrisis heeft geleid tot een vastgoedcrisis die grote invloed heeft gehad op de Nederlandse kantorenmarkten, en zorgde ervoor dat de leegstand verder escaleerde en als een acuut probleem werd ervaren.
